Overview
Designing a new website for Russborough House in County Wicklow, OPEN considered the diverse things to see and do there, conscious that it encompasses a wide range of activities and attractions. People come to see one of Ireland’s finest stately homes. They come to see the architecture, the world-famous art collection, the birds of prey and to enjoy the grounds, family activities and wildlife demonstrations. There is a lot going on. The aim was to create a new website which brought all of the attractions together, but without clutter and with a great user experience. Russborough brings centuries of history to life and we created a website that invokes that heritage in the digital world.
The Solutions
OPEN brings innovation to the heritage space by rethinking how a cultural landmark like Russborough House operates online. The website is a living digital experience, showcasing art and nature in an accessible way.
Our use of drone technology was central to the initial visual impact the website would have. Our art direction was considered and carefully curated activities within Russborough and it was a totally new approach for it. We used a modular storytelling form. Rather than static lists, we used different shapes and sizes to show the diverse range of events, with interesting sections giving the user a feeling of browsing a gallery rather than scrolling lists.
The interactive estate map is a new approach for Russborough and users can now see the range of trails, walks and gardens at a glance. It also shows the House and Gardens as a family destination with something for everyone. History is not overlooked. Interestingly, it’s woven into the website. There is a dedicated history section that you can delve into, but it’s seen as part and parcel of other sections too, without feeling intrusive.
The new structure and tone of voice have helped us better connect with our core audiences: cultural tourists, families, day-trippers, and heritage enthusiasts. Several users have commented that the new site feels more welcoming and contemporary, while still honouring the house’s history and identity. We’ve also seen an increase in the number of email enquiries for group visits, school excursions, venue hire and advance ticket bookings, indicating improved usability and interest.
