Project
Overview
An exhibition exploring the pioneering role of the An Túr Gloine studio in the Irish Arts and Crafts movement. Founded in 1903, the studio was a hub of artistic innovation, blending romantic nationalism with the British Arts and Crafts methods.
Predominantly female-led, the collective featured influential artists like Wilhelmina Geddes, Catherine O’Brien, and Evie Hone, whose collaborative model and exceptional craftsmanship distinguished the studio globally. This exhibition showcases their work, emphasising the collective’s impact on both Irish art and international stained glass artistry.
The Solutions
The exhibition was meticulously designed to celebrate the pioneering work of the Irish stained glass studio An Túr Gloine, while creating an immersive, educational, and visually striking experience for visitors. Central to the project was the creation of an independent exhibition identity that distinguished the showcase within The National Gallery, reflecting both the historical significance and artistic innovation of the studio.
One of the key features was the use of floor-to-ceiling graphics, which played a dual role in both narrating the story of An Túr Gloine and enhancing the exhibition space. The graphics combined carefully chosen historical imagery with modern, easy-to-read explanatory typography, ensuring that the rich history of the studio and its artists was accessible to all visitors. The design of these visuals was inspired by the intricate details of stained glass, bringing the craftsmanship and artistry of the studio to life in a contemporary context.
The exhibition also emphasised sustainability in its execution. Materials were chosen for their environmental impact, ensuring that the exhibit was not only visually compelling but also responsible in its footprint. The modular design of the exhibition elements allowed for reuse and reconfiguration, extending the life of the materials beyond the duration of the exhibition.
